Karen Elzey, associate executive director of Workcred, an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) affiliate, moderated an issue session during the National Association of Workforce Boards (NAWB) Forum 2019 where expert panelists discussed improving the understanding of content, use, and value of credentials, and how to expand the use of quality standards for credentials. The session, Examining the Quality, Value, and Effectiveness of Credentials, took place on March 24, 2019, in Washington, DC.
The pathways from education to employment are undergoing a revolution. There is an explosion of activity around skill-based-hiring including stackable credentials and digital badges. These trends are creating rich opportunities for employers, individuals, workforce boards, training providers, and educational institutions who are ahead of the curve - but confusion and uncertainty remain. Many believe that credentials could serve as a critical resource if they were better understood and more in line with needed skills.
Ms. Elzey joined experts Sierra Hampton-Simmons, global manager of certification exams at Project Management Institute; Mark Plunkett, CompTIA's senior director of business development; Roger Tadajewski, executive director of NC3; and Holly Zanville, Lumina Foundation's strategy director for the future of learning and work. The panelists shared insights and best practices on strategies for aligning skill needs to credential requirements.
The Forum, which ran from March 23-26, 2019, allowed workforce development professionals and leaders in business, government, labor, and education to gather and gain insights into the current state of our nation's workforce system and consider the goals and policy framework affecting the future of human capital development.
