Major Grant Made to Increase the Transparency and Value of Industry Credentials and Degrees

Lumina Foundation has awarded a grant of $2.25 million to the George Washington University and two partner organizations to build and test a first-of-its kind “credential registry.” The registry will allow users to easily compare the quality and value of workforce credentials, such as college degrees and industry certifications, using a web-based system with information provided directly by the institutions issuing the credentials.

Credentialing experts, military personnel, and representatives from federal agencies and non-profit organizations convened at the American Legion National Credentialing Summit in Washington, D.C., last week to discuss collaborative solutions for facilitating the transition of military service members into civilian careers. Highlights of the April 28–29 event included interactive panel discussions on closing the skills gap, military spouse credentialing, best practices in transportation credentialing, and “Assessing the Quality and Value of Credentials,” moderated by Roy Swift, Ph.D., executive director of Workcred, an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) affiliate.

ANSI-Affiliated Workcred Granted 501(c)(3) Status

Less than a year after its launch, Workcred, an American National Standards Institute (ANSI)–affiliated organization, was granted tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the United States Internal Revenue Code. Workcred’s mission is to strengthen workforce quality by improving the credentialing system, ensuring its ongoing relevance, and preparing employers, workers, educators, and governments to use it effectively.

ANSI and Workcred Board Member to Co-Chair Revision of Major ISO Standard for Accreditation

Cynthia Woodley, Ed.D., a principal contributor to the successful growth of ANSI Accreditation programs for more than a decade, was recently selected to serve as co-convenor of a new ISO CASCO (International Organization for Standardization Conformity Assessment Committee) Working Group (WG) tasked with revising ISO/IEC 17011, Conformity assessment - General requirements for accreditation bodies accrediting conformity assessment bodies. She is joined as co-convenor by Alister Dalrymple of the Association Française de Normalization (AFNOR).

ANSI Board of Directors Approves Creation of Workcred
New ANSI Affiliate Will Bolster Knowledge of Competency-Based, Industry-Endorsed Credentials

[ July 22, 2014]
At its May 2014 meeting, the Board of Directors of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) voted to approve the creation of Workcred, a new ANSI affiliate organization tasked with increasing awareness of competency-based, industry-recognized workforce credentials and supporting efforts to improve the quality, transparency, portability, and market value of these important tools. Workcred will be a nonprofit corporation and tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) and will maintain separation from and respect the impartiality of ANSI’s accreditation services.

George Washington University Partners with ANSI to Lead Study on Credentialing Standards
